2 Steps to Fall Asleep Easily
Do you always find yourself having trouble falling asleep? Even if you have been in bed and closed your eyes for a long time, you still toss and turn restlessly. Have you ever wonder why you can't fall asleep easily even after an exhausting day? After reading the following 2 steps you will know why you can't fall asleep easily and how to avoid it.
Turn off electronics BEFORE going to bed
Do you always fall asleep with the music or maybe you browse TikTok before going to bed? Whether you are using your phone, your computer or a TV screen, electronics might be keeping you up. Playing video games can delay sleep onset. Watching TV leads to early rising, even listening to music increases the risk of having nightmares. However, all of these have one thing in common-they all make it harder to fall asleep.
Computers, phones, and TVs emit blue lights which restricts the production of melatonin. Your bodies release melatonin into the blood to reduce alertness, which makes you tired. This process usually starts at around 9:00 o'clock at night. The start time can change depending on when you go to bed. But it will continue for about 12 hours afterward. Ideally, melatonin should enter your bloodstream a few hours before bed so that you have time to relax and gradually drift off to sleep. However, if you're using electronics, your body won't know you are going to sleep.
Electronics also require you to be focused and be vigilant which is mentally stimulating. As a result, when you try to sleep, your brain gets confused. Because it can't jump from excitement to relaxation in a short time. Just like melatonin needs time to kick in, your brain needs time to switch.
Remember to turn devices off at least an hour before bed so that your brain have time to relax.
Stay OUT of Bed
Some people often eat, watch TV or play games in bed. While staying in bed is certainly comfortable, these habits may influence your sleep.
Your brains will naturally associate behaviors and places together. For example, when you go to school, your brain recognizes where you are and what you will do. You don't want to watch a movie or kick your shoes off because that's not what you usually do in this environment. However, if you start to relax during class, your brain would start to associate the two together. The same thing applies to your bed. If you eat, wacth TV or play games in bed you're creating new associations so that your bed isn't just for sleep anymore. Moreover, your brain doesn't know how to feel -should it be focused and vigilant like you are playing games or should it be relaxed like you are at night.
You can avoid this behavioral confusion by making your bed only for sleeping. Try to keep all meals, electronics and work in another room. When you finally finish your work and climb into bed, your body will react accordingly.
Try to follow these two steps, and you might find falling asleep easily will no longer be a hard thing.
I think that getting good sleep every night is a lot more important than people make it seem. People often stay up late every day and pulling all-nighters to complete work is not uncommon. However, I believe that sleeping well every night can make it so that you'll be able to do the work in a smaller period of time and will help prevent burnout.
ReplyDeleteSometimes when I'm having trouble falling asleep, instead of staying in my bed hoping that I will fall asleep I will get out and do something else for a half hour to an hour. It seems to help and is a lot more enjoyable than trying to force myself to sleep and counting the minutes go by.
Thanks for replying. When I can't fall asleep, getting out of bed and doing something else is really helpful. Staying in the bed and hoping to fall asleep is such a pain.
DeleteI think this blog helps a lot. I usually had a hard time to fall asleep in night. I enjoy watching video on my bed maybe for a couple of hours. Therefore, I usually cannot have a good sleep in night. But after I decide to make my bed only for sleeping, I feel much relieved on bed and it's much easier for me to have a good sleep. I can keep concentrated during class time. Thank you!

Glad to hear that! Watching videos before going to bed has a large effect on the releasing of melatonin so that it's hard for you to sleep.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your article and thought it was very helpful for students especially. Personally, watching TikTok late at night definitely makes it much harder for me to fall asleep. When I read before bed, I can usually fall asleep much faster. Keeping your bed as a place just for sleeping is important too. I liked the way you compared it to the classroom. Last year, I did a lot of my online classes in bed, so I often fell asleep during class and couldn't fall asleep at night. Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone, but especially for college students who often struggle with this. Some other tips I have learned for better quality sleep are exercising and avoiding caffeine at night.
ReplyDeleteYour praise is highly appreciated. I also had a hard time focusing on the online classes last year. It's hard to stay awake in bed especially for classes held at early morning.
DeleteGreat blog! I always play video games late at night, which is so hard to sleep then in 1 ~2 hours. Base on the information you offer in your blog, I found this is not a good habit. However, I also find a way to sleep soon that reading before sleeping is really a good help for the brain ralax, especially when the reading material is kind of boring. Your blog make a big help for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for replying. Your mind might get relaxed when you are reading some boring books so that you will feel sleepy in a short time.
DeleteI was inspired by your blog's very scientific explanation of two factors that affect sleep! I think I'm getting trouble with both of your problems, the propensity to use my cell phone before bed and the tendency to do things in bed even when it's not bedtime. I deeply understand the cause of my poor sleep quality through your blog, which is very effective for me. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt's glad to know the blog can help you. I believe you can fall asleep easily as long as you improve these habits before sleeping.
DeleteYour blog really helps me a lot! The sleeping quality problem has been annoying me for a long time. Your tip of turning off electronics really reminds me of my bad habits. I usually play phone for about one hour before I get to bed, which may be why I sometimes will easily feel too excited to fall asleep at night. I will try to reduce my time spent on these electronics before I get to sleep. Thanks a lot for your tips!
ReplyDeleteThanks for replying! Playing phone before sleeping is quite usual for me as well, but it does have a large effect on the sleeping.
DeleteMy high school psychology teacher told us that beds were for two things: sleeping and sex. I never work on homework or eat in my bed, but I am very guilty of browsing social media before I try to sleep. The worst part is I know that it's bad for me, but for some reason I do it anyways! This article has inspired me to be more disciplined with my nightly routine. Thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteIt's glad to know my article can help you! I also browse social media before sleeping even though it will keep me awake for a long time. It takes time to change routine.
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this article, I've had trouble falling asleep quickly before and I found that staying off my phone and not watching any TV is the best trick. I also learned about this function on the iPhone called night shift where it takes the blue light out of your screen not affecting your melatonin production. I think that not being on your phone at all is the best, but this trick on the iPhone is very useful and could help.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your advice! The night shift function will definitely improve the condition when you can't avoid using the phone before sleeping.
DeleteYour blog and mine both talk about sleeping issues, and I'd say we share the same ideas on how to get a good sleep! Your tip of turning off electronics really reminds me of my bad habits since I would like to spend a long time on mobile devices before getting to sleep. So in order to get good sleep, I would take your advice on reducing the time of using mobile devices before getting asleep. Thanks a lot for your tips!
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Using cell phone before sleeping is the most common problem. You will get good sleep as long as you improve this problem.
